What is a Young Ambassador?

Young Ambassadors are aged between 14 and 19 years old. They promote the 2012 Games to other young people by promoting the Olympic and Paralympic ethos and values. They also act as sporting role models to young people in their own communities and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.

How did it all begin?

The Youth Sport Trust (YST) started the Young Ambassador programme in 2006 as a direct response to London winning the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of their winning bid, London promised to use the Games to inspire millions of young people through sport.  Central to the Young Ambassador programme is the principal of young people driving opportunities and change for other young people aged 5 to 19 years old.
How are Young Ambassadors selected?

Each of the 450 School Sport Partnerships in England selects two Young Ambassadors. One Young Ambassador is a gifted and talented sports performer and the second is a committed sports volunteer. Young Ambassadors undertake the role for at least two years. After their first year in the role they have the additional responsibility of becoming a mentor for the new Young Ambassadors in their School Sport Partnership. By 2012 we're hoping to have at least 5,000 Young Ambassadors across the UK.

Support and resources for Young Ambassadors to date:

Each Young Ambassador has been given the opportunity to attend a Young Ambassador Conference to inspire and support them. Throughout the year each Young Ambassador will also receive a set of resources, information and challenges to assist them in carrying out their role.

How is the Young Ambassador programme delivered?

The Young Ambassador programme sits within the Leadership and Volunteering strand of the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) in England. The Young Ambassador programme is managed by the Youth Sport Trust. It is funded jointly by the Department for Culture Media and Sport and the Department for Children Schools and Families.
